The leak you cannot see

Most bathroom renovations in Pune are planned around tiles, fittings and colours, and that is exactly why so many of them leak. A bathroom is the wettest room in your home, and its waterproofing is buried under the tiles — invisible, unglamorous, and the single factor that decides whether your renovation lasts five years or fifteen. Ceiling stains in the flat below, damp patches on the shared bedroom wall, a musty smell that never leaves: these are waterproofing failures, and they surface months or years after the renovation, when fixing them means breaking the bathroom open again. In a bathroom renovation, waterproofing is not a line item. It is the foundation of the whole job.

Waterproofing before tiles, always

The correct order of a bathroom renovation is fixed: demolish, redo plumbing and electrical rough-ins, waterproof, test, tile, then fittings. Waterproofing comes after the pipes are in and before a single tile is laid, because the waterproofing skin must be continuous under everything. Any contractor who proposes waterproofing over existing tiles as a shortcut, or who treats waterproofing as an optional upgrade to save money, is planning your future leak. The tiles are the decoration; the waterproofing is the bathroom.

The bathroom waterproofing sequence

A proper bathroom waterproofing sequence looks like this. First, the floor and walls are cleaned back to sound concrete or plaster, and the sunken slab — the depressed portion under most Indian bathrooms — is inspected and any old fill removed. Plumbing lines are laid or re-laid now, with their entry points through walls and floors positioned before waterproofing. Then a primer is applied, followed by two or three coats of a waterproofing system — usually a cementitious two-component coating or a liquid membrane — brought up the walls to at least a foot above the floor level, higher behind the shower area. A fibre mesh is embedded at corners, joints and pipe penetrations. Finally, the sunken portion is filled, the floor screed is laid to slope toward the drain, and only then does tiling begin.

Corners, pipes and drains: the failure points

Nearly every bathroom leak starts at the same handful of weak spots: the corners where floor meets wall, the mouths of pipes and drains, the junction between the bathroom floor and the doorway, and the area behind concealed cisterns and mixer fittings. A good contractor reinforces all of these with mesh and extra coats, and forms a small raised curb at the doorway so water cannot migrate out into the bedroom floor. The drain area deserves particular care — the waterproofing must turn down into the drain mouth properly. Ask your contractor specifically how each of these points will be treated; a vague answer is a red flag.

Testing before tiling

Testing is the step that separates professionals from hopefuls. After the waterproofing is complete and cured, the drain is plugged and the bathroom floor is flooded with water — a ponding or flood test — and left for 24 to 48 hours while the ceiling below and the neighbouring walls are checked for any sign of seepage. Only when the test passes does tiling begin. If your contractor wants to skip this test to save a day or two, insist on it: it is the cheapest insurance in the entire renovation, and a failed test caught now costs a fraction of a failed bathroom discovered next monsoon.

Budgeting and choosing a contractor

When you budget a bathroom renovation, separate the waterproofing cost mentally from the finishes. Skimping on tiles saves money with no structural consequence; skimping on waterproofing saves little and risks everything. Get item-wise quotes that name the waterproofing system, the number of coats, the areas covered, and whether a flood test is included. Compare contractors on this sequence — demolition, plumbing, waterproofing, testing, tiling — not just on the per-bathroom total. The cheapest quote that skips or rushes waterproofing is the most expensive bathroom you will ever buy.

Practical next step

A bathroom renovation done in the right sequence gives you a room you never have to think about for a decade or more. The tiles you choose will age gracefully because the structure beneath them is dry and stable, your neighbours downstairs will have no complaints, and the next monsoon will pass without a second thought. It all starts with treating waterproofing as the first and most important decision, not an afterthought.
