The bedroom map in Vastu

Bedroom vastu direction is one of the most detailed parts of Vastu Shastra, with a specific recommended zone for the master bedroom, children's rooms, and guest rooms. For a family building a new home in Pune, the bedroom map is worth studying before the floor plan is frozen, because bedrooms are the hardest rooms to relocate later — they carry the plumbing of attached bathrooms, the electrical layout, and the window positions with them.

Master bedroom: the southwest anchor

Vastu places the master bedroom in the southwest. The reasoning combines stability and climate sense: the southwest is the heaviest, most settled zone of the house, and in Pune a southwest bedroom stays warm in winter and can be shaded in summer with proper overhangs. The head of the bed should point south or west while sleeping, with south preferred. Many Pune architects accept the southwest master bedroom as the default starting point of a plan, and it rarely conflicts with structural logic since the southwest corner is also convenient for load distribution in a simple rectangular plan.

Children's and guest bedrooms

Children's bedrooms are recommended in the west or northwest, and guest bedrooms in the northwest. The northwest is considered the zone of movement and change, which suits guests who come and go. For a typical three-bedroom Pune home, this maps neatly: master in the southwest, children's room in the west or northwest, and the third room doubling as guest room or study in the northwest or north. When a family needs four bedrooms, the remaining rooms go to the zones that remain, with the understanding that not every room can occupy an ideal direction.

Sleeping direction and bed placement

Bed placement rules are followed even by families who are relaxed about room directions. The bed should not sit directly under a beam — a rule with a practical echo, since sleeping under a heavy beam feels oppressive and beams collect dust. The head of the bed should rest against a solid wall rather than under a window, which also improves sleep quality by blocking drafts and street light. Mirrors facing the bed are discouraged in Vastu; practically, a mirror reflecting the bed also bounces morning light into sleepers' eyes, so the advice converges.

What Vastu says about attached bathrooms

Attached bathrooms are a modern feature Vastu texts never contemplated, so current guidance is a practical adaptation: place the attached toilet in the northwest or west portion of the bedroom, keep the bathroom door closed, and avoid placing the toilet directly against the bed's head wall. From a construction view, the attached bathroom's position matters for plumbing stacks — bathrooms stacked vertically floor over floor share drainage lines and cost less to build and maintain. Aligning the Vastu-preferred bathroom zone with the plumbing stack location is one of those small design wins that saves money for the life of the house.

Windows, light and real comfort

Whatever the direction, a bedroom must get morning light and fresh air to be pleasant. East and north windows give the best daylight without heat; west windows need shading devices or they turn the room into an oven on summer evenings in Pune. Plan window sizes during the design stage rather than cutting them later, and confirm the sill heights work with the bed position — a window behind the bed head looks fine on paper and feels wrong in the room. Good bedrooms are made as much by light and air as by direction.

When the plan cannot follow the map

When the plot or the plan cannot follow the Vastu bedroom map exactly, prioritise in this order: keep the master bedroom toward the southwest if possible, keep the sleeping direction correct, and keep bathrooms out of the northeast. These three cover the guidance most families care about, and everything else can flex. A bedroom that is quiet, well ventilated, correctly lit, and structurally sound will serve the family well regardless of which compass point it occupies.
