The Stage Most People Never See
Long before the paint goes on and the furniture comes in, a home passes through its most demanding stage: interior finishing. On our Pune sites, this is the week the house starts looking finished — and also the week when every small error made earlier in the structure tries to show itself. Today’s site diary photo captures a craftsman applying wall putty, the thin skim coat that decides how smooth every painted wall in the house will feel for years.
Finishing Is a Sequence, Not a Shortcut
Finishing is a sequence, not a shortcut. On a well-run site, the order is everything: concealed electrical and plumbing lines first, then plaster and putty, then ceiling work, then tile and stone lining, then fixtures, then paint. Each trade’s work protects the next one’s. When the sequence is broken — a tile cutter arrives before the wall is puttied, or paint starts before the electrical boxes are aligned — rework multiplies. One of the quietest skills of a good site supervisor is simply keeping the trades in the right order.
Walls, Tiles and Lines: The Detail Triad
Three details decide whether finishing looks premium or merely passable. First, walls: level plaster plus two careful coats of putty, sanded between coats, is what gives paint that even, soft finish — one hurried coat and the wall will telegraph every undulation. Second, tiles: straight lines, consistent joints and proper leveling, because a tile floor is the one surface everyone walks on and looks down at every day. Third, lines: door frames, skirting and electrical plates all need to sit flush and square; gaps and crooked plates are the small betrayals that cheapen a whole room.
What Finishing Quality Protects
Good finishing also protects what you cannot see. A properly puttied and primed wall resists damp and peeling through Pune’s monsoon. Tiles laid with correct mortar coverage do not hollow out or crack a year later. Sealed edges around bathroom fittings stop seepage before it starts. Finishing is not cosmetic in the shallow sense — it is the protective layer between your structure and daily life.
From Our Site Diary Today
Today on our site: wall putty in progress on the internal walls, with tiles stacked and ready for lining once the plaster cures, and electrical boxes aligned and waiting for their plates. This is the unglamorous middle of home construction — and it is exactly where a house earns its long life.
