Surface preparation before the first trowel

The wall plastering process is the bridge between bare masonry and a finished home, and it is also where the most expensive paint jobs go to fail. Plaster that is poorly prepared, mixed too lean or cured too little will crack, sound hollow when tapped or peel paint within a year, no matter how premium the paint on top. For homeowners building in Pune, understanding what good plastering looks like is one of the simplest ways to protect the finish of your new home.

Getting the mix right

Everything starts with surface preparation. Before plaster is applied, the masonry must be cleaned of dust, loose particles and any mortar droppings, and the joints between blocks or bricks should be raked out slightly so the plaster has something to grip. Concrete surfaces need special attention because they are smooth: a hacking pattern or a bonding slurry coat gives the plaster mechanical key, and without it, plaster peels off concrete columns and beams first. Water absorption is managed by pre-wetting the wall a day before plastering, but the surface should be damp, not dripping, when work begins.

Thickness, levels and the number of coats

The mix itself is where many sites quietly compromise. Plaster mortar is cement and sand in a ratio decided by your engineer or the project specification, and the sand must be clean, well-graded and free of silt and organic matter. Mixing should be measured, ideally by boxes or a gauged batch, not by shovelfuls guessed at the mortar pit. Only as much mortar as can be used within its working time should be mixed; re-tempering old, stiffened mortar with extra water is a common shortcut that produces weak, powdery plaster.

Curing: the step nobody wants to wait for

Thickness and level decide whether your walls look straight. For most internal masonry walls a single coat of plaster at the specified thickness is enough, while external walls often receive two coats: a base coat and a finishing coat. The plasterer sets vertical reference strips, called screeds, at intervals and fills between them, checking with a spirit level and a straight edge so the wall plane stays true. Bulges and hollows show up cruelly once the wall is painted or tiled, and fixing them after finishing costs many times what correct screeding would have.

Quality checks you can do yourself

Curing is the most skipped and most important step. Plaster needs to be kept moist for the curing period specified by your engineer, usually with light water spraying that starts soon after the plaster has set enough not to wash away. In Pune's dry months, wind and sun can draw moisture out of fresh plaster within hours, leading to shrinkage cracks and weak surface strength. Well-cured plaster sounds solid when tapped and bonds tightly; under-cured plaster sounds hollow and dusts when you rub it.

Practical next step

You can check plaster quality yourself with three simple tests. Tap the wall lightly with your knuckles or a small rod and listen: a sharp, solid sound is good, while a dull or drummy sound marks hollow plaster that will likely debond. Run your palm across the finished surface to feel for waves and undulations, and sight along the wall against the light to spot deviations a level might miss. Look closely at corners, window reveals and the line where walls meet ceilings, because these are the places where sloppy work hides.

Practical next step

Plaster is one of those parts of construction you cannot see once the paint is on, so insisting on process discipline before painting starts is your only real protection. Walk your site during the plastering stage, ask to see the mix being gauged, and tap a few walls yourself before the painter arrives.
