Why plan rooftop solar while the house is still on paper

Rooftop solar for a new Pune home is far easier to get right when it is planned while the house is still on paper. Panels installed on a roof that was never designed for them often end up mounted on awkward frames, shading the terrace, fighting with water tanks and dish antennas for space, and requiring fresh drilling through waterproofing that was laid only months earlier. A few decisions during design and construction, most of them free or cheap, turn the terrace into a ready platform and the house into a building that is genuinely solar-ready from day one.

Structural preparation: the roof must be ready for the panels

The first question is structural, and it belongs to your structural engineer. Solar panels and their mounting frames add distributed load to the slab, and wind uplift during storms pulls at the anchor points, so the roof slab design should account for this additional loading wherever panels are planned. Tell the engineer the approximate panel zone at the design stage; reinforcing a slab on paper costs almost nothing, while strengthening a finished roof is a project in itself. Equally important, decide how the mounts will attach to the roof without puncturing the waterproofing layer, because every unnecessary penetration is a future leak.

Orientation, shade and terrace layout

Orientation and shading decide how much of Pune's generous sunshine your panels actually convert. In the northern hemisphere, a south-facing tilt captures the most sun across the year, and even a small shadow from a parapet, staircase bulkhead, or neighbouring tower can disproportionately cut a string's output, so map the shadows across the seasons before fixing the panel zone. Keep the solar area clear of future clutter: water tanks, clothes lines and antenna masts should live on a different part of the terrace. A clean, unshaded rectangle reserved on the drawings is worth more than a few extra panels squeezed around obstacles.

Electrical prep to build in during construction

The electrical preparation is where building-stage planning pays most. Run dedicated conduits from the planned panel zone down to the meter room or a designated inverter location while the walls are still open, because surface-mounted cabling later is ugly and expensive. Provide proper earthing for the array as part of the house's earthing system, and keep a spare way in the distribution board for the solar feed. If you are considering battery backup or a hybrid setup, decide the inverter location and ventilation during construction so the equipment has a dry, accessible home instead of a corner carved out after handover.

Sizing the system honestly

Honest sizing starts with your actual consumption, not the biggest system a vendor wants to sell. Look at your expected daytime load, your sanctioned connected load, and how much of your usage genuinely happens when the sun is up. Maharashtra's power distribution company offers grid-connected rooftop solar schemes with net metering, which lets exported surplus offset your bill, but the current policy details, application process and metering rules change from time to time, so confirm them with the discom before committing to a system size. Oversizing beyond what your sanctioned load and the net-metering rules support is money that never comes back.

Coordinating solar with the rest of the build

Coordination is what separates a clean installation from a compromised one. The solar installer should come in after terrace waterproofing is complete and tested, but before final terrace finishes and railings close off access. Give one party, ideally your main contractor or a designated coordinator, single-point responsibility for the interface: slab loading, waterproofing penetrations, conduit routes and the handover of as-built drawings to the solar vendor. When the builder and the solar team work from the same plan, the panels go up in days and the roof never leaks.

Practical next step

Building a new home in Pune and want it solar-ready from the foundation up, with the structural, waterproofing and electrical prep handled as part of the main construction? H&H SPACES builds civil, residential, commercial and turnkey projects across Pune with exactly this kind of coordination.
