Vitrified vs ceramic: the one decision that matters most
Tiles selection for home flooring can feel overwhelming the moment you walk into a showroom in Pune. Hundreds of designs, several price bands, and sales terms you have never heard before. The good news is that durable flooring comes down to a handful of decisions: the right tile body for each area, the right size and finish, and installation done properly. Get those right and your floors will look good for decades.
Understanding tile ratings without the jargon
The first decision is vitrified vs ceramic. Vitrified tiles are denser, harder and far less porous, which makes them the default choice for living areas, bedrooms and hallways in most new Pune homes. Ceramic tiles are lighter and easier to cut, and they work well for walls, but for floor areas with real foot traffic, vitrified holds up better against scratches and stains. Porcelain is the premium end of the vitrified family. Within each type, quality varies by brand and grade, so this is a material choice, not just a budget one.
Size and finish: what suits which room
Tile boxes carry ratings worth a quick read. The PEI rating measures surface abrasion resistance, and PEI III to V suits residential floors. The shade and calibre codes tell you whether all boxes came from the same production batch, because tiles from different lots can differ slightly in tone and size. For bathrooms and balconies, look for the slip resistance or anti-skid marking rather than choosing by appearance alone.
Slip resistance and safety where it counts
Size and finish change how a room feels. Large-format tiles of 600 by 1200 mm or 800 by 800 mm mean fewer grout lines and a more seamless look in living rooms, though they need flatter floors and skilled laying. Matte and rustic finishes hide dust better, which helps in Pune's dry season, while glossy finishes show every footprint but open up smaller rooms visually. For bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor areas, an anti-skid or matte finish is the safer call, especially with elders or children at home.
Buying tips: quantity, shade lots and spare stock
When buying, order roughly ten percent extra beyond the measured area to cover cutting waste and breakage, and keep at least one full box of spare tiles stored after installation. If a tile cracks five years later, finding the same shade lot again is nearly impossible. Buy all boxes from the same shade and calibre lot, and have the delivery checked on site before the laying begins. Stacking tiles flat in a dry spot prevents warping and edge damage.
Grout, skirting and the finishing details
The small finishing details separate a premium-looking floor from an average one. Skirting tiles or a clean painted skirting line protects wall bases and gives the floor a finished edge. Grout colour matters more than people expect: a grout close to the tile tone looks seamless, while a contrasting grout turns the floor into a grid pattern. In wet areas, use waterproof epoxy grout rather than ordinary cement grout, which stains and crumbles over time. After laying, insist on a proper cure period before heavy furniture or equipment moves across the new floor, and protect finished floors with sheets while other trades are still working in the house.
Installation quality decides the final result
Even the best tiles look bad on a badly prepared base. Flooring needs a level screed, correct adhesive or mortar bedding, consistent joint gaps with spacers, and proper grouting with waterproof grout in wet areas. Hollow-sounding tiles usually mean poor bedding underneath, and they crack under load sooner or later. Walk the floor with your contractor before final grouting and tap a few tiles to check for hollow spots.
