Reading a crack: what the shape tells you
Almost every Pune home has some wall cracks, and most of them are harmless. The skill is reading what a crack is telling you. A thin, spider-webby line on the surface that appeared within a year of plastering is a different animal from a wide diagonal crack that runs from a window corner toward the floor and keeps growing. Wall crack repair starts with diagnosis, because painting over a structural crack is cosmetic hiding, while breaking open a harmless shrinkage crack is unnecessary destruction. This guide walks through the common types seen in Pune homes, what causes them, and how each should be handled.
Plaster cracks and shrinkage
Plaster cracks are the most common and the least alarming. They appear as fine, irregular lines, sometimes in a map-like network, usually within the first year after plastering. The cause is shrinkage: cement plaster loses water as it cures, and if it was applied too thick, too rich in cement, cured poorly, or plastered in hot wind, it shrinks and craze-cracks. Pune's dry summer heat accelerates this. These cracks are only in the plaster skin, not the wall beneath. They do not grow, they do not leak structurally, and they are repaired simply by scraping out the loose material, filling with a crack filler, sanding, and repainting.
Cracks at door and window corners
Cracks radiating from door and window corners are stress cracks. Openings weaken a wall, and as the building settles or the frame shrinks, tension concentrates at the sharp corners and the plaster or masonry gives way. You will often see a diagonal line leaving the top or bottom corner of a window, or a vertical crack beside a door frame. In most Pune houses these are a maintenance nuisance rather than a danger, especially if they have stayed the same size for a year or more. The proper wall crack repair here is to open the crack in a V shape, fill it with a flexible, fibre-reinforced crack filler or sealant, and repaint with an elastic paint so minor movement does not reopen it immediately.
Structural cracks you should not ignore
Some cracks do need a professional to look at them, and it helps to know the warning signs. A crack wider than a coin's edge, one that runs through the masonry in a staircase or diagonal pattern, a crack that is noticeably wider at one end than the other, or any crack that keeps getting longer or wider month after month — these can signal foundation settlement, an overloaded wall, or a compromised RCC member. Cracks in columns or beams are in a different category from cracks in partition walls, and a bulging or damp wall alongside a crack deserves investigation rather than a quick fill. When in doubt, a structural engineer or an experienced contractor should inspect before any repair.
The right repair for each type
Matching the repair to the crack type is what makes wall crack repair last. Fine shrinkage cracks: rake out, fill with crack filler, prime, and repaint. Corners and joints that move: use a flexible polyurethane or acrylic sealant after V-grooving, because rigid filler will simply crack again next season. Damaged plaster that sounds hollow when tapped: cut back to sound plaster and redo the patch properly, since hollow plaster will take paint and crack again. Deep cracks in masonry: fill in layers with non-shrink grout or a mortar with an expansive admixture, not a single skin of putty. And for external walls in Pune, always finish with an exterior-grade paint after the monsoon, when the wall is dry.
Watching cracks over time
One more discipline that costs nothing: monitor before you repair. Mark the ends of a worrying crack with a pencil and the date, and check it every couple of months. A crack that has not moved in a year is almost certainly done moving and can be repaired with confidence. A crack that is actively growing is telling you the cause is still active — settlement, water, a tree root, a neighbouring excavation — and filling it without addressing the cause guarantees you will do the job twice. Photos with a coin for scale, taken at intervals, are the simplest record you can keep.
Practical next step
In Pune, two seasonal patterns are worth knowing. Cracks often appear or widen in the hot months as materials expand and dry, and leaks through wall cracks show up during the monsoon. The best sequence is: diagnose and monitor through one season, do structural or external repairs in the dry months, and repaint exteriors after the monsoon so the wall is dry and the paint bonds properly.
